Ruth Z. Brattin, 89, of Carthage, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011, in Freeman Hospital West, Joplin.
She was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Butterfield, the daughter of Lon and Maye (Montgomery) Shoopman. On April 13, 1941, in Benton County, Ark., she was united in marriage to Dan Brattin, Jr., who preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 1998. Also preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Danny Joe Brattin, in 1942; one brother, Paul Shoopman; and one sister, Ruby Prier.
Survivors include: two sons, Barry Brattin and his wife, Susan, of Carthage, and Scott Brattin and his wife, Lorraine, of Webb City; six grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
She grew up and received her education at Butterfield, graduating from high school in 1939. In 1958, she and Dan moved to Redondo Beach, Calif., and remained there until 1962 when they moved back to Butterfield and became the owners of Brattin Grocery. For 10 years, she was employed as a cashier for Johnston's Hardware and Variety in Cassville. In the late '70s she was postmistress at Butterfield. She had lived in Carthage since 1994, and since that time was assistant cook at the Over 60 Center, worked in the Salvation Army Thrift Store, the Jasper County Records Department and was a volunteer at McCune Brooks Hospital. She was a member of Cassville United Methodist Church and attended Carthage United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held Monday in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Rev. James Lee and Rev. Don Beeson conducted the services.
