Joseph "Cornell" Evans, 93, of Springfield, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011, at St. John's Mercy Villa in Springfield.

He was born on Jan. 1, 1918, in Mcdowell, the son of the late Joseph H. Evans and Eva (Ozburn) Evans. He spent his early years in the McDowell area and graduated from Purdy High School and attended Monett Junior College. He received his master's degree from Drury. He taught at Monett High School and later was the junior high principal. He attended the First Baptist Church in Monett.

He married Sammy Buehler on July 6, 1941, in McDowell, and she survives.

Additional survivors include: one son, Samuel "Bud" Evans and his wife, Mary Lee, of Hollister; one daughter, Dian House and her husband, David, of Springfield; two sisters Zylene Harris and Deloris Bashaw; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday in Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, with Dr. Bill Cox officiating. Interment was at Bethel Cemetery, south of Monett.
