Elizabeth 'Betty' Smith, age 103, Joplin, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center.
Elizabeth was born February 17, 1907, in Wheaton, Missouri, to the late Daniel Boone Roller and Nevada Jane Collier Roller.
She was a 1926 graduate of Wheaton High School where she played basketball. In 1928, she married Dr. Elburn Allman Smith in Cassville and they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
They were blessed with two children, Blaine Allman Smith, born in 1929, and Molly Jayne Smith, born in 1933.
Elizabeth and Elburn lived in Kansas City, Missouri from 1937 until 1941 while Elburn attended Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery. They moved to Monett in 1941 and lived there until 1946, when they moved to Wheaton. She and Elburn owned and operated the Wheaton Hospital. From 1951 until 1955, they lived in Welch, Oklahoma, and together they owned and operated the Welch Hospital. It was then that Elizabeth became a licensed practical nurse. In 1955, they moved to Neosho, where Elburn practiced medicine until he retired in 1976.
Elizabeth and Elburn lived in Neosho following his retirement. He preceded her in death on March 24, 1998. She then moved to Joplin, where she was a member of College Heights Christian Church. She was also a former member of the Neosho Methodist Church and the Eastern Star of Wheaton and Neosho.
Elizabeth celebrated her 100th birthday in 2007 and was honored by over 300 guests. She will be dearly missed.
In addition to her parents and husband, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her son, Blaine Allman Smith.
Survivors include her daughter, Molly Jayne Smith and her husband, Jim, Joplin; four grandchildren, David Lynn Smith and his wife, Lori, Deborah Ellen Gatwood, James Duston Smith and his wife, Terri, and Rebecca Dawn Cupp; and eight great grandchildren, Debby Michele Hatten and her husband, Jeffrey, Jon Tyler, Dalton Park Smith, Preston Rhodes Smith, Chandler Young Smith, Logan Reed Smith, Elise Miranda Cupp, and Jarrod Evan Cupp.
Services were Saturday at 11 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Bob Hubbard officiated. Interment followed at Bethel Cemetery, Purdy, Missouri. The family received friends from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the mortuary. Pallbearers were Dalton Smith, Preston Smith, Chandler Smith, Logan Smith, Jarrod Cupp, T.J.
