Wildcat strikers are district champs
For the third time in five years, the Cassville Wildcat soccer team has claimed the district championship.
Cassville opened district play at Monett by defeating their hosts 3-1 in a game that was played on back-to-back evenings due to lightning.
The Cubs scored a goal just before halftime and held a 1-0 lead until 20 minutes into the second half when Austin Deffenbaugh scored on a free kick by Corey Sanders to tie the game at 1-1.
Deffenbaugh's goal opened up the Cassville onslaught. The Wildcats took control of the match and scored two more goals to secure the 3-1 win. Jordan Bailey scored a goal off of a cornerkick by BJ McGuffey and then McGuffey scored an unassisted goal to close out Cassville's scoring for the night.
In the district championship game on Wednesday, the Wildcats faced off against Carl Junction and earned the 1-0 victory.
Bailey again found the net, scoring an unassisted goal in the first half on a perfect shot from the top of the box. In the second half, the Bulldogs attacked, but the Cassville defense was able to shutdown the Carl Junction defense and allow Bailey's goal to stand as the gamewinner.
"Our players have really come together at the end of the season," said Coach Brian Wilbanks. "Most of the team had never started or played in a varsity game before this year, and it took awhile for them to make the adjustment."
On Tuesday night, Cassville hosted Bolivar in a sectional game. Results were not available at presstime.
The Cassville Wildcat soccer team earned district championships in 2005 and 2007 and went on to compete in the state tournament both years.
