The Monett Cubs took second in the varsity boys division of the Cassville Invitational on Monday, Oct. 11, but it was the Southwest Trojans who turned the most heads with their surprising third place finish. After a lackluster year in 2009, the Trojans are back under new coach Jess Ross.
Jacob Jennings led the Southwest pack, taking second overall behind McDonald County's Jordan Noffsinger. Chris Renteria placed third in leading Monett to the second place trophy.
McDonald County also won the varsity girls competition to sweep the tallest trophies. Monett's Hannah Martin and Madeleine Weber finished one and two to help the Lady Cubs to a third place team finish. Cassville's girls placed fourth.
In the middle school races, Cassville's Nathan Vitt placed third to lead area runners. Zach Miles, of Southwest, was fourth, Tyler Pendergraft, of Wheaton, was fifth and Hunter Kirk, of Cassville, was ninth as four of the top 10 finishers hailed from local teams.
Cassville's McKenzie Durossette placed 25th in the middle school girls race to lead area runners.
Southwest Trojans boys varsity results: Jacob Jennings, second, 16:47; Cristian Sellars, 16th, 18:17; James Petit, 21st, 18:35; Kyle Miller, 35th, 19:41; Evan Jermaine, 36th, 19:51; and Justin Petit, 43rd, 20:51.
Wheaton Bulldog boys varsity results: Jon Sherwood, 30th, 19:16; Matt Hickman, 39th, 20:13; Justin Yeary, 44th, 20:52; Jakob Beck, 45th, 20:53; Tyler Musick, 46th, 20:56; and Justin Walker, 48th, 20:58. The Bulldogs finished sixth as a team.
Cassville Wildcats results, incomplete team boys varsity results: Taylor Dodson, 24th, 18:53; Jordan Shore, 37th, 19:55; and Walker Perez, 47th, 20:56.
Cassville Ladycat girls varsity results: Jessica Barrientos, fourth, 21:38; Deborah Kern, fifth, 22:03; Reba Dupont, 22nd, 25:01; Sydney Beuterbaugh, 26th, 25:46; Destinee Naugle, 28th, 26:01; and Sammye Borushaski, 36th, 29:23.
Cheyenne Hackett finished 10th for the Southwest Lady Trojans with a time of 23:05, while Wheaton's Breanna Brattin finished 15th in a time of 23:44 and Shannon Burns was 19th with a time of 24:18.
In the JV boys race, Cassville's Chris Hinebaugh was sixth and Wheaton's Kayvick Yang was ninth.
