The Cassville Wildcat soccer team won third place at the very competitive Willard Tournament this past week.
Avenging an early season loss, Cassville defeated rival Monett 5-2 for third place honors on Saturday. The game was tied 2-2 at halftime before the Wildcats got fired up and scored three goals in the second half to take the win.
Senior B.J. McGuffey scored three goals for his second hat trick of the tournament to lead Cassville. The other three goals in the game were provided by Gerardo Barbosa, Jesus Zermeno and Garrett Barnes, who scored on a penalty kick. Corey Sanders had three assists in the contest.
The Wildcats opened up tournament play last Thursday night with a 3-0 win. McGuffey scored all three of Cassville's goals with assists credited to Zermeno and Jordan Bailey.
In the semi-final game on Saturday morning, Cassville played host Willard and fell 4-0. The Tigers went on to win their own tournament, defeating Bolivar 3-0 in the championship game.
"We played very well against them (Willard)," said Coach Brian Wilbanks.
Last Tuesday, Cassville traveled to Joplin to play College Heights in a regular season match-up. The Wildcats lost 3-1 to an improving soccer team. David Verde scored Cassville's lone goal. It was Verde's first varsity goal.
"Our win over Monett puts us back in the hunt for the top seed in districts depending on the outcome of three more district games to come," said Coach Wilbanks.
Cassville will travel to Carthage on Thursday and to Monett on Monday before hosting Greenwood next Tuesday.
