Around 125 local residents turned out for the Cassville Family YMCA's Healthy Kids Day Fair on Saturday. The event was held in the First Baptist Church Family Life Center parking lot in Cassville.

"The booths were great, and we had good community support this year," said Michelle Bredeson, Cassville YMCA facility manager. "You couldn't have asked for any better weather than we had. It wasn't too hot or too cold."

Children attending the event had the opportunity to play in a variety of inflatables and pet several animals visiting Cassville from the Promised Land Zoo in Eagle Rock. Kids also received free T-shirts and healthy snacks during the fair.

"The run went well," said Bredeson. "We had a good amount of kids take part in the fun run. I think we counted around 30 kids participating."

Gordan Brown, Cassville and Monett YMCA director, encouraged the kids to complete the entire mile long run by cheering them on throughout the race. Jacob Crouthamel took a late lead and claimed first place in the fun run event.

"I hope the kids had a good time," said Bredeson. "I hope they realize that healthy activities are fun. A lot of kids don't realize that everything they do in those inflatables, climbing and jumping, are all good activities for kids

"I hope they also received some health and safety information during the event," said Bredeson. "Dr. (Carolyn) Hunter handed out toothbrushes, and Barry Electric gave away safety information."

All Healthy Kids Day Fair activities were offered at no charge. The event was sponsored by the following businesses: Promised Land Zoo, Runnels Chiropractic, Barry Electric, Piggy Paint, Access Medical Care, the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, Dr. Carolyn Hunter, Robert "Bob" Foulke, Walmart and All Points Recycling.

"I hope to get even more kids and businesses involved in the event next year," said Bredeson. "I want to grow this event every year."

The Cassville YMCA offers a number of programs and activities including swimming lessons, a cheer and tumbling program, soccer and flag football leagues and other fitness programs.

The facility, which is located on Highway 248 in Cassville, offers cardio equipment, free weights, a wellness studio and free childcare while parents work out.
