George Veryl Gurney, age 76, of Cassville, Missouri, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2009, in Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, Missouri.

He was born August 2, 1933, in Red Cloud, Nebraska, the son of William and Lillian (Coleman) Gurney. On August 14, 1976, in Kansas City, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Lois (Nelson) Groves, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Terry Jones and Glen Doke, of Neosho, Missouri, and Marsha Leigh, of Warrensburg, Missouri; one son, Ronald Groves of Richmond, Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Jill Groves, of Kansas City, Missouri; three sisters, Ruth Ward, of Kansas City, Missouri, Mildred Lindgren and her husband, Ronald, of Oroville, California and Jane Gurney, of El Paso, Texas; one brother, Ralph Gurney and his wife, Lena of Fayetteville, Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Shawn, Tyler and Kaci Groves, Gina Schaeffer, Morgan Leigh, Bryanna and Denton Jones and one great-grandchild, Jaidyn Schaeffer. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and five brothers.

George received his education in Deer, Arkansas, graduating from Deer High School in 1952. He then attended Arkansas Technical College in Russellville. For four years he served in the United States Navy as a machinist mate. Throughout his life time he worked for Bendix Corporation in Kansas City where he was a draftsman and then for the Kansas City Water Department as a chemical engineer. He retired from General Motors in the Trim Department in 1986. Eighteen years ago he moved to Cassville to make his home. He attended faithfully the First Baptist Church of Cassville where he was involved in various ministries and the Triple L. Club. He loved gardening, water gardens and wildlife. He was known at "Mr. Fix It" to those who knew him well.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 16, 2009, in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Reverend James Weaver will conduct the services. Burial will be at Washburn Prairie Cemetery, Washburn, Missouri.
