Erma Jean Preston, 82, of Seligman, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at St. John's Hospital in Cassville.
She was born on Dec. 12, 1926, in Seligman, the daughter of Burl Pleasant and Artie Caroline (Rubow) Mitchell. She was a 1944 graduate of Seligman High School and began her working career at the Seligman Farmer's MFA with her father. On May 16, 1945, she went to work for the U. S. Postal Department in Seligman as a postal clerk. In 1972, she became the Postmaster in Exeter and retired on Dec. 3, 1983, after 37 years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Seligman.
She married Walter Fred Preston on Jan. 5, 1945, at the First Baptist Church in Rogers, Ark. He survives.
Additional survivors include: one son, Phillip Preston and his wife, Kaye, of Madison, Ala.; one daughter, JoHannah Close and her husband, Phillip, of Racine; two grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Loretta Mitchell, of Seligman.
In addition to her parents, She was preceded in death by four brothers, William Monroe Mitchell, who died in infancy; Charlie James Mitchell, who was killed and buried in Italy in 1943 during World War II; Earl Frank Mitchell in 1965; and Clyde Gordon Mitchell, in 1998; and one sister, Alice Pauline Padgett in 1999.
Graveside services were held today (Wednesday) at the Seligman Cemetery in Seligman, under the direction of the White Funeral Home, Cassville.
Memorials may be entrusted to the White Funeral Home for the Seligman Cemetery or the Ronald McDonald House of Joplin.
