Local product gets Hollywood premiere
Piggy Paint made its Hollywood debut on Saturday, June 6 at Stella McDermott's first birthday party. Stella is the daughter of Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott who star in the "Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood" reality series that airs on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. on the Oxygen channel.
The show offers viewers a glimpse into Tori and Dean's life as the parents of two young children in the fast-paced world of Hollywood. The popular program has just begun its fourth season.
Prior to Stella's big birthday bash, which will be part of an upcoming episode, Tori discovered Piggy Paints, and invited the small-town Piggy Paint girls from Missouri to paint nails at the celebration.
Piggy Paint founder Melanie Hurley said she received a call from Tori's publicist on Monday, June 1 and flew out to Los Angeles, Calif., to attend the birthday party on Saturday.
Piggy Paint is a natural, eco-friendly, non-toxic kid nail polish that was developed by Melanie and launched in September of 2008. Melanie, a busy mom herself, operates the burgeoning business out of Cassville.
Melanie said her introduction to Tori came through a request from a public relations group to include Piggy Paint in gift bags that were to be handed out to guests at Stella's birthday party. Melanie was also asked to send one of every color to Tori.
"When Tori received the product, she loved it and had her publicist call and invite Piggy Paint to Stella's party," said Melanie. "When we got there, we set up and started painting the guests' fingernails."
Stella's nails sparkled with Piggy Paint's Sometimes Sweet polish. This bright red color was also a favorite for the guests who visited "Stella's Salon."
In keeping with the party's ladybug theme, many of the guests used the red Sometimes Sweet polish followed by dots of Piggy Paint's black Sleepover polish to create ladybug nails.
Tori said she plans on using the shimmery silver Twinkle Toes and black Sleepover polish on her son Liam's feet this summer. Dean has also been known to polish his toenails and Liam always wants to be like his dad, Tori said.
Piggy Paint's Girls Rule! polish was a top pick for Dannielynn, daughter of Larry Birkhead and the late Anna Nicole Smith, and Rena Sofer's little girl. Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin's girls chose the softer colors of Clouds of Candy and Angel Kisses, followed by a top coat of the shimmery Glass Slippers.
"It was really surreal," said Melanie. "It was neat to see all the celebrities and see them just being parents.
"I got to meet Tori and she was very nice," Melanie added. "She said 'I can't thank you enough for coming,' and she was very appreciative."
As the little guests' nails were drying, they enjoyed singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and the "ABC's."
Melanie, a former teacher, explained that even nail painting can be a fun, educational experience and had fun interacting with the children and their famous parents.
"Each child left "Stella's Salon" polished like a princess or prince, and the parents were at ease as the kids licked their little piggies clean, in hopes to get every last drop of the scrumptious icing from Stella's ladybug cake," said Melanie.
The guests also left with generous gift bags that included the Piggy Paint product. In all, there were over 100 family and friends in attendance at little Stella's party.
