"The board has voted to rename the Barry County Health Department office the Joyce Vaughan Memorial Clinic," said John Starchman, board chairman. "Joyce served on the health department board from April of 1999 to when she passed away in 2006."
Starchman presented a memorial plaque to Vaughan's family members and friends who attended the dedication. The plaque will be mounted in the Cassville office.
"I want to thank everybody for this," said Vaughan's mother, Helen Sivadon. "Joyce thanks you too. She may not be here, but she is here in spirit."
Vaughan's son, Steven, also attended the dedication ceremony. He thanked the health department on behalf of his family and his brother, Allen, who was unable to attend the event.
"Joyce was a very dedicated board member," said Starchman. "She knew the most about the employees and guided us on employee benefit issues. She was always deeply concerned about how issues would affect the local residents and employees."
Although she wasn't able to see the completion of the Cassville office renovation project, which the board began planning for in 2006, Vaughan took part in developing the initial floor plan proposal for the project.
"Joyce was a very sincere board member and a good example for all of us," said Starchman. "She was very dedicated to public health. She was one of the people who encouraged me to be involved with the health department.
"The longer I knew her the more I respected and liked her," said Starchman. "She was a special individual. She was very common in her approach, but she was very bright, and she always had a unique, solid perspective."
In addition to serving on the Barry County Health Department Board of Trustees for seven years, Vaughan worked at the South Barry County Hospital for over 30 years. She served in the human resources department and as assistant administrator at the hospital.
Vaughan, who graduated from Cassville High School in 1949, received a degree in hospital administration from Drury College. She was also active in the Silver Leaf Benefit Club, the St. John's Hospital-Cassville Auxiliary and the Cassville Chamber.
