Warren Edgar Betts, 85, of Cassville, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2009. He was born July 15, 1923, in Guthrie County, Iowa, son of Charles Franklin and Ena Pearl (Crandall) Betts. He had eight brothers and three sisters.

He was united in marriage to Elaine Marie Bowman on May 20, 1951, at Greenbrier Methodist Church, Greene County, Iowa.

He attended rural school in Orange TWP No. 9, and went to high school in Bayard two years. He graduated from Guthrie Center High School, Guthrie Center, Iowa, in 1940. He helped his dad farm 400 acres after graduation until Uncle Sam called in 1944. He served in the Pacific Theater where he earned several awards, including the Southwest Pacific Medal with 2 battle stars, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Expert Infantry Badge. He was discharged in 1946 as a corporal in the army. He retired after 30 years of service with the Federal Soil Conservation Service in January of 1988 as an engineering technician.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 118 of Cassville and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Iowa. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as president of the board of trustees, leader of the MYF for years, on the administrative board and on the missions committee for several years.

Preceding him in death are his parents; sisters, Leila and Verona; brothers, Claire and Harold in infancy; and brothers, Claude, Floyd, Donald, Paul and Leon Betts.

Survivors include: his wife Elaine (Bowman) Betts, of Cassville; a daughter, Linda Pearl and her husband, William J. Buckingham, of Muncie, Ind.; a son, Donnell Edward and his wife, Sally Betts, of New Hartford, Iowa; five daughters, Lila Rae and her husband, CSM (Ret) Dean M. Kolker, of Rolla, RieVon Marie Betts, of Rolla, Rita Irene and her husband, John D. Tyson, of Superior, Wis., Darla Sue and her husband, Dr. J. Patrick Otto, of Tulsa, Okla., and Loa Jean and her husband, J. Allen Osborne, of Waxhaw, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother John C. Betts and wife, Betty, of Indianola, Iowa; a sister Freda Luckinbill, of Branson; and three sisters-in-law, Esther Betts, of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Vi Betts, of Buck Grove, Iowa, and Karen Betts, of Ursa, Ill.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Cassville United Methodist Church under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Rev. Lee Porch will conduct the services. Military honors will be conducted.
