Prisoners clean up local highways - On March 6, Barry County Jail inmates had the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the warm weather while performing community service. Prisoners picked up trash along Highways 112 and 76/86 east of Cassville. "This is a great way for them to give back," said Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly. "It's a beautiful day to be outside, and it's really good for them to be out here doing this." Epperly oversees several community service projects each year. In the past, prisoners have completed painting and landscaping projects. They also helped clean up storm debris after tornados struck the Purdy area last year. Prisoners who participate in the community service days sign a waiver before heading out to work. Inmates remain shackled while working, and no prisoners that pose a flight risk are allowed to participate. Democrat photo
