City court cases hold steady in '08

After recording a big jump in court fines last year, the amount collected by the Cassville Municipal Court in 2008 rose only slightly. This past year, the local court received $106,448.69 in fines as compared to $101,077.70 in 2007.

The number of cases handled by the court remained fairly steady. In 2008, there were a total of 1,134 cases entered as compared to 1,162 in 2007. In all, the Cassville Municipal Court disposed of 1,090 cases in 2008, which is 47 less than in 2007.

The court saw a big decrease in the number warrants issued. This past year, there were 237 warrants generated by the court, which is 31 percent less than the 348 warrants issued in 2007.

Cassville Municipal Court was the site of seven trials during 2008, which is almost twice as many as the four held in 2007. Of the total cases handled by the court in 2008, 700 were disposed of following a guilty plea by the defendant.

In 2008, the court generated a total of $139,911.61 in revenue, which is almost identical to the $139,792.53 generated in 2007.

A breakdown of 2008 revenues is as follows: $106,448.69, fines; $10,617.45, court costs; $1,754, police training fund; $881.75, P.O.S.T.; $6,605.08, crime victim compensation; $2,183.25, recoup fee; $225, DARE; $2,146.25, jail board collected; $5,019.50, warrant; $1,960.42, restitution; $629, judicial training fund; $50, interpreter; and $1,391,22, court automation fee.

During 2008, Cassville Municipal Court cases involved the following offenses (2007 numbers appear in parentheses for each offense): animal neglect or abuse, 2 (3) careless and imprudent driving, 28 (12); child restraint, 15 (8); city parks after hours, 2 (3); defective equipment, 3 (0); discharge firearm in city, 1 (1); disorderly conduct, 51 (31); domestic assault in the third degree, 7 (3).

The Cassville Municipal Court is responsible for processing all misdemeanor summonses issued by the Cassville Police Department. Felony cases are handled by the Barry County Prosecutor's Office.

Court operations are overseen by Municipal Court Clerk Jennifer Privett. The court was also served in 2008 by Municipal Court Judge Dale Burke and City Prosecutor David Cole. Lonnie McCullough is the Cassville chief of police.
