The Purdy Lady Eagles defeated Verona 61-51 on Saturday, Jan. 24 to win the championship game of the Galena Tournament.
Purdy started hot from the field, leading 15-8 at the end of the first quarter. Verona's fine freshman guard Tristan Carrsasquillo collected three first quarter fouls, an ominous sign for the Lady Wildcats.
Purdy stretched the lead to 40-24 at half, but then Verona made a run to begin the third quarter. A pair of treys pulled the Wildcats within 10 and then another flurry cut the lead to only 5 in the fourth quarter.
Purdy answered every challenge and made free throws when it counted to seal the 10-point victory.
Shelby White keyed the Lady Eagles with 21 points. Addy Roller had 16, and Audrey Patton and Brooke Swadley both scored a dozen.
Verona also had four players in double figures: Jessica Smith scored 16, Jenna Chadd had 14, Carrasquillo scored 11 with her foul woes, and Felicia Chadd added 10. Four of Verona's starting five finished the game with four fouls apiece.
