Relay ready to kick off in county

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Plans are already underway for the 2009 South Barry County Relay for Life, which will be held on July 17 and 18 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at the Cassville High School football stadium.

This year, two kick-off events are being planned - one in Cassville and one in Shell Knob. The Cassville kick-off will take place at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2 at Mill Street Church of Christ. The new kick-off in Shell Knob will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 at the First Christian Church in Shell Knob.

"Shell Knob's kick-off is new this year," said Kendra Gray, American Cancer Society staff person. "We are really hoping to get more involvement from the Shell Knob area (by holding the meeting there)."

Both events will include a chili and soup supper and those attending will have the opportunity to get information on how to form a Relay team.

"All who want to join in the fight against cancer are welcome to attend these events, which will kick off the 2009 Relay season," said Gray.

In addition to announcing the dates for this year's kick-off events, local Relay officials are looking for additional community volunteers who would be interested in serving on the South Barry County Relay for Life Committee.

"If you are passionate about fighting cancer in your community, we would love to have your help," said Gray.

The Committee meets on the first Monday of the month at 5:15 p.m. in the conference room at Barry Electric. Meetings will begin after the kick-off events, so the first committee meeting is set for March 2.
