Ladycats fall to Blue Eye
Blue Eye jumped on Cassville's Ladycats 21-6 in the first quarter and cruised to a 56-25 victory on Thursday, Jan. 8.
"We were caught up playing their pace in the first quarter and didn't get off to a good start," said Cassville Coach Chris Shore.
Cassville never recovered from the first quarter blitz, although the Ladycats did buckle down and held Blue Eye under 10 points in both the third and fourth periods. But the Cassville offense didn't score more than eight in any quarter as the game kept slipping away.
Emily Orrell led Cassville with her 12 points and eight rebounds. Hannah Elkins tossed in 5 points and Gail Edie contributed 4 points and four boards.
Kelsey Hullinger, of Blue Eye, led all scorers with 18.
Shore emphasized that there were some positives for Cassville during the Blue Eye game.
"Gail Edie did a solid job playing post defense, and we didn't turn the ball over that much against their press," Coach Shore said. "This game was a setback for us, because we had been playing pretty well. We are just going to put this game behind us and keep working to improve."
The Ladycats' next home game is scheduled for this Thursday, Jan. 15 versus Big 8 rival Mt. Vernon. Cassville will also be hosting Chadwick on Friday, Jan. 16.
The squad faces a busy week next week as the Ladycats begin play in the 2009 Lady Comet Classic in Marionville. Cassville, seeded fifth in the tournament, is scheduled to play fourth-seeded Pleasant Hope at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19.
