Library district accepts computer bid

Friday, December 26, 2008

The Barry-Lawrence Regional Library Board of Trustees accepted a bid for several new computers at its regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 20.

The board received one bid from Software Specialists for 20 replacement computers with the Windows Vista Business System. According to the bid, the district would be charged $1,020 per computer for a total of $20,400.

The board accepted Software Specialists' bid. The computers will be purchased with equalization funds.

In new business, the board reviewed a $2,984.93 bid from Economy Heating and Air Conditioning for an air conditioner condenser unit that will be placed at the Shell Knob Branch Library.

According to the bid, Economy Heating and Air Conditioning will install an Armstrong condenser unit on the roof of the Shell Knob Library. The bid includes removing the old unit, Skylift rental, all connections and a non-programmable digital thermostat.

The board approved the expense, which will be paid for with equalization funds.

Jean Berg, library district director, reported that equalization funds have also been used to purchase five laptop computers, which were placed at the Cassville, Monett and Purdy branch libraries. The computers will be used to teach computer courses.

Other equalization funds were used to purchase new DVDs for several Barry County branches. All equalization funds must be used by Dec. 31.

The board also discussed a staff concern at its November meeting. Verna Fry, part-time clerk at the Cassville Branch, has asked for a leave of absence due to a health issue. She hopes to return in March or April of 2009.

Cheryl Williams, who also works part-time at the Cassville Library, is willing to work 40 hours per week until Fry returns. Williams' salary would be $1,479.99 per month, which is $170 less than the district is paying the two employees combined.

The board agreed to allow Williams to work 40 hours per week while Fry is absent. In addition to an increase in pay, Williams will receive sick leave after three months and paid holidays that fall in the temporary period.

In other business, the Barry-Lawrence Regional Library Board of Trustees:

* Approved the October financial report.

* Heard an update on the Monett building project.

* Voted to close all library branches on Friday, Dec. 18 for the annual regional staff meeting.

* Heard that $480.80 has been received from the Cassville Friends of the Library. The funds will be used for programs. A $272.68 donation was also received from the Super 8 Motel in Cassville, which will pay for several magazine subscription renewals.
