The Cassville Ladycats opened the 2008-09 basketball season last week in the Blue Eye Tournament.
In opening round action, Cassville fell to Spokane 48-55. Junior Emily Orrell led the Ladycats' scoring effort with 10 points. Others adding to the point total were: Hannah Elkins, 9 points; Marti Richmiller and Gail Edie, 8 points each; Ariel Oswald, 7 points; and Jaime Everett, 6 points.
The Ladycats rebounded in the second round of play, defeating Wheaton 40-19. Orrell again led the squad with 11 points and eight steals. Edie also had a strong performance, recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
For the consolation championship, Cassville faced off against Forsyth and ended up losing a heartbreaker by a score of 34-36. Edie had 14 points in the loss and Elkins had 12 points.
"We were able to see the things that we need to work on to get better," said Coach Chris Shore.
The Ladycats will play their next three games on the road. Cassville will play at McDonald County on Dec. 11, at Reeds Spring on Dec. 15 and at East Newton on Dec. 18. The girls first home game is scheduled for Dec. 22 against Pierce City.
