The City of Cassville has been awarded a $109,976 grant that will allow the municipality to construct a new sidewalk along Highway Y connecting two Cassville R-IV School campuses.
The funding was awarded through the Safe Routes to Schools grant program, which is administered by the Missouri Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Division.
Officials with the city, the school district, the county and MoDOT have been working in tandem for over a year on the sidewalk project. The effort got underway in the weeks following a tragic car-pedestrian accident on Highway Y that claimed the life of a Cassville High School student on his way to school last fall.
Engineering work for the project was conducted and funded by MoDOT. The grant itself was written and submitted by the city. Six property owners who live along Highway Y have graciously agreed to give the city easements so there is room for the sidewalk to be added along the east side of the busy roadway.
Project specifications call for construction of a five-foot wide sidewalk that would extend approximately 1,500 feet
