James William Woods, 89, of Cassville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, in his home.
He was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Strong, Ark., the son of Edward and Myrtle Maude (Doan) Woods. On Aug. 2, 1939, he was united in marriage to Maude Laney, who survives.
Additional survivors include: three daughters, Wilma Long, of Monett, Sue Hill and her husband, Ron, of Lee's Summit, and Shirley Sermon and her husband, Bob, of West Plains; one brother, Frank Woods, of Kalespell, Mont.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Daniel and John; a sister, Nancy; his twin sister, Jane; one son-in-law, Gary Long; and one grandson.
He received his education in Ellisnore, where he graduated from high school. In 1938, James joined the CCC's and helped establish Roaring River State Park. He was in the United States Navy during World War II, serving from Jan. 24, 1944, until Dec. 8, 1945. He managed Wheaton Farmers Exchange several years and had been mayor in Wheaton. he was an insurance agent in Cassville for 40 years. He purchased Chaney Insurance and combined it with Shelter Insurance. He attended Cassville First Baptist Church and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wheaton. He was a life member of American Legion Post 118, where he was commander two years. he and his wife, Maude, delivered Meals on Wheels in the Cassville area for 10 years.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Rev. James Weaver conducted the services. Burial with military honors was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cassville.
