Wheaton council discusses upcoming holiday events

The Wheaton City Council discussed upcoming holiday events at its regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 9.

Wheaton's 2008 Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13. Pastors from each of the city's churches will be asked to serve as grand marshals for the event.

The aldermen voted to offer $100 in cash prizes for the winning float entries and $50 in cash prizes for other winning entries. In the float division, first place will be awarded $50. Second place will receive $30 and third place will receive $20. Other category prizes will be $25 for first place, $15 for second place and $10 for third place.

The council also decided to host a holiday lighting contest for city residents. The first place winner of the contest will receive $50. The second place winner will be awarded $30 and the third place winner will earn $20.

In new business, the aldermen voted to supply the Wheaton Historical Society's depot with water. The society will be responsible for paying for water and sewer hook-ups to the facility.

In other business, the Wheaton City Council:

* Approved the August bills.

* Voted to purchase a new copy machine for city hall and donate the old machine to the Wheaton Volunteer Fire Department.
