Lady Trojan spikers drop three matches

Thursday, October 9, 2008

The Southwest volleyball team lost three close matches to Pierce City, Hurley and Wheaton last week.

"We could have easily won all three matches," said sixth-year Coach Steve Voyak. "We have just been inconsistent and have trouble finishing at the end of a set. We led in the matches against Pierce City and Hurley and lost the first five points to Wheaton before playing them tough the rest of the way."

Junior Marisa Fletcher led Southwest with 27 attacks and five blocks, while junior Stacie Pendergraft added 15 attacks and three blocks.

With three weeks left in the season, the Lady Trojans stand 6-16-2 overall and 2-2 in the Ozark 7 Conference.

Southwest plays host to College Heights Christian and then travels to Joplin to play McAuley Catholic for a league match this week.

In JV action, the Lady Trojans earned their first win of the season over Wheaton in three sets last week. Ka Yang had four attacks, while Courtney Breamer added four aces and three attacks.

The JV now has a record of 1-12-2. They play in the McAuley Tourney Saturday with Carthage, College Heights, Seneca and Monett.
