The Wheaton High School Smokin' Dogs cooking team has been invited to cater the Security Bank celebration that will be held in Cassville on Oct. 4.
"The team catered the Georgia Poultry event last spring," said Barbara Skinner, cooking program sponsor. "When the bank began making plans for its event, we were contacted and asked if we would be interested and capable of handling such a large event."
After discussing the invitation with the students and team sponsors, the group decided to cater the event, which will provide meals for around 1,000 people.
"This event has involved a great amount of planning," said Skinner. "We have a team of 62 students, and they have been involved in all aspects."
Smokin' Dogs team members will light the barbecue fires at 5 a.m. on Saturday.
"Besides culinary skills, students have learned planning, organization, teamwork, leadership and time management skills," said Skinner. "Having the opportunity to cater an event for 1,000 people is not an everyday occurrence. We are grateful for the many and varied teaching and learning experiences that this event brings to our team."
The Smokin' Dogs took second place in the Exeter Rib Contest this year. Around a dozen team members will participate in a state service and learning conference at Osage Beach Oct. 5 through 7.
