Lady Trojans hit rough patch

Thursday, September 25, 2008

The Southwest Lady Trojan high school volleyball team opened its home schedule with two non-conference matches and the annual Volleyfest Tourney last week.

Southwest lost matches to Galena, Diamond, Blue Eye, Forsyth and Huntsville (Ark.) and tied a match with Verona. After three weeks of the season, the Lady Trojans are 2-9-1.

"The girls had a really bad night against Galena but rebounded after that," said Coach Steve Voyak. "They played hard in the tounament but still struggled to play as a team, especially when things got difficult. We led two sets in the tourney by six points and somehow lost."

The team returns to action this week with a conference match at home against Verona. Southwest also plays in the Diamond Tourney Saturday with both the JV and varsity participating. The Lady Trojans face Marionville, Purdy, Lamar and Golden City in pool play.

Cassville won the Volleyfest tourney by defeating Shiloh Christian (Ark.) in three sets in the championship.

At the conclusion of play on Saturday, an All-Tournament team was chosen. Honored players included: Marty Richmiller and Olivia Cline, of Cassville; Cami Garrison and Hannah West, of Shiloh Christian; Kristi Fredrick and Kayla Hickey, of Blue Eye; Marisa Fletcher, of Southwest; and Alicia Steckler, of Forsyth.
