Demo Derby draws record crowd

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Saturday night's Demolition Derby attracted the largest crowd in the event's six-year history. Officials with the Cassville Rotary Club, who sponsored the derby, estimate there were over 2,000 in attendance at the Bill Hailey Arena.

Cassville's own Rusty Newman was the overall winner in modified cars feature event. He earned $1,300 in prize money for his showing.

This is Rusty's fifth year to participate in the Cassville Rotary Club's Demolition Derby and the fourth year he's used the same car, which is sponsored by Freedom Bank, B & K Auto, Ozark Healthy Herb Shop and Newman Small Engine.

"We put so much work into the cars and I enjoy beating up on the other cars and seeing how well my car holds up," said Rusty. "I guess I just enjoy the adrenaline rush."

Other local derby participants in addition to Rusty included his brother Ryan Newman, Lane Truman, Brice Stehlik and Devin Barber, all of Cassville.

Over $3,500 was awarded to the three finalists in each heat and winners of each category, which are listed below.

* Feature Modified: Newman, first place; Mark Brown, second place; Brian Ray, third place; Jeff Bartholomew, fourth place; and Jeff Haraughty, fifth place.

* Modified class heat #1: Rusty Newman, Jeff Bartholomew and Devin Barber.

* Modified class heat #2: Rex Jordon, Mark Brown and Jeff Haraughty.

* Consolation heat: Harold Blair, Brice Stehlik and Brian Ray.

* Compact class: Chris Jones, first place; Kevin Stoll, second place; and Rusty Newman, third place.

* Stock class: Denzil Arms, first place; and Justin Kepley, second place.

Herb Primrose, who headed up publicity for the derby, was pleased that the rain held off to allow the event to proceed.

"The field was muddy again this year but provided great entertainment for the fans," said Primrose.

The Cassville Rotary Club plans to hold its seventh annual Demolition Derby next summer.
