Southwest spikers split pair of games

Thursday, September 11, 2008

The Southwest volleyball team split its first two matches of the season, winning at Thomas Jefferson and losing to Exeter last week.

The Lady Trojans defeated TJ 25-12, 25-20 Tuesday and then lost to the Exeter in three sets Thursday. Both matches were Ozark 7 Conference contests.

Junior Marisa Fletcher led Southwest with 18 attacks, while junior Stacie Pendergraft added eight digs.

"Except for serving, it was a good first week," said sixth-year Coach Steve Voyak. "We need to work on all facets of the game, but we missed 16 serves against Exeter and that's simply too many against anybody, let alone against a team as good as Exeter."

The JV squad lost both matches to TJ and Exeter.

Southwest continues action this week with non-conference matches with Marionville and East Newton. The Lady Trojans also play in the Thomas Jefferson Tourney Saturday in Joplin. Southwest plays its first home match Sept. 16 against Galena.
