Student enrollment drops slightly

A total of 6,619 students were in their seats on the first day of school in Barry County, according to enrollment figures provided by district officials last week. The 2008-09 school year marks a slight drop in student attendance over last year when the county's seven school districts welcomed 6,892 students to class.

Exeter and Wheaton school districts reported increases in enrollment while Shell Knob, Cassville, Monett, Purdy and Southwest saw their student numbers decrease.

Exeter was the district that experienced the biggest increase in enrollment for the 2008-09 school year, growing by 12 percent. This fall there are 379 students enrolled in the R-VI District, which is 43 more than at the start of the 2007-08 school year.

Wheaton is also serving more students this year, increasing from 461 students last year to its current enrollment of 493.

Monett saw the largest drop in student numbers, decreasing from 2,200 last year to 2,042 this fall. Cassville has 122 less students enrolled than it did last fall, dropping from 2,084 last year to 1,962 this year.

Enrollment at Southwest decreased by 32 students, going from 926 students last year to 881 this year. Shell Knob and Purdy also have smaller enrollments at the start of the 2008-09 school year. Shell Knob decreased from 165 last year to 147 this year, and Purdy dropped by just five students, decreasing from 720 last year to 715 this year.

A breakdown of enrollment figures by grade is provided below for all seven school districts located in Barry County. The number in parentheses is the number enrolled in that grade at the start of the 2007-08 school year.

* Cassville: preschool, 66 (62); kindergarten, 139 (129); first grade, 124 (156); second grade, 139 (158); third grade, 147 (147); fourth grade, 136 (138); fifth grade, 133 (138); sixth grade, 138 (145); seventh grade, 140 (148); eighth grade, 142 (158); ninth grade, 169 (203); 10th grade, 184 (186); 11th grade, 165 (158); and 12th grade, 140 (160).

* Monett: preschool, 101 (92); kindergarten, 176 (182) first grade, 166 (189); second grade, 174 (160); third grade, 151 (180); fourth grade, 181 (156); fifth grade, 139 (161); sixth grade, 164 (135); seventh grade, 135 (168); eighth grade, 151 (153); ninth grade, 162 (178); 10th grade, 151 (176); 11th grade, 161 (142); and 12th grade, 131 (128).

* Shell Knob: kindergarten, 12 (17); first grade, 16 (18); second grade, 18 (18); third grade, 16 (12); fourth grade, 10 (21); fifth grade, 19 (13); sixth grade, 13 (20); seventh grade, 21 (24); and eighth grade, 22 (22).

All of these numbers reflect enrollment prior to the Labor Day holiday.
