Butterfield stagecoach returns to Cassville

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Cassville will be one of the stops made during the upcoming 150th anniversary Butterfield Stagecoach ride through southwest Missouri.

The historic stagecoach, driven by Rick and Beverly Hamby, of West Plains, and crew, will begin its journey in Springfield on Sept. 7 and continue into Arkansas on Sept. 12. The event commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Butterfield Overland Mail Route, which ran from 1958 until the Civil War broke out in 1861.

The ride begins at Rutledge-Wilson Farm Community Park in Springfield on Sept. 7 where the stage coach will be on display.

The stagecoach will travel through Barry County on Sept. 9 and camp at Hilton Church near Osa. The Star City Ranch north of Cassville, which is located on the Old Wire Road, will provide the campsite on the night of Sept. 10.

A short program will take place at the Cassville square on Sept. 11 and the stagecoach will demonstrate a mail exchange along Washburn Prairie Road from Cassville to Southwest School. That night, a special presentation will take place at the Cassville Middle School.
