Area restaurants undergo inspections during July

The Environmental Services division of the Barry County Health Department inspected 30 food-service establishments during the month of July. Of that group, 12 establishments had critical violations, 11 had no critical or non-critical violations and seven had only non-critical violations.

Lakeside Marine in Shell Knob, Roaring River Water Slide in Cassville, Harlin Fruit Co. in Monett, Butterfield Stage Stop were subject to routine inspections in July that yielded no violations, either critical or non-critical. Country Rock Cafe in Eagle Rock, Kyle's Pizza in Monett, The Malt Shoppe in Seligman and Richard's Hawgwild BBQ in Shell Knob underwent pre-opening inspections that yielded no critical or non-critical violations. Acambaro Mexican Restaurant in Monett and Carole's Family Restaurant in Shell Knob underwent follow-up inspections in July that yielded no critical or non-critical violations. Long John's Silvers/KFC in Monett underwent an inspection following a complaint and no critical or non-critical violations were found.

Critical violations were found at 12 establishments:

* Subway in Shell Knob underwent a routine inspection on July 7 and two critical and one non-critical violations were found. The critical violations were failure to demonstrate knowledge of proper food handling and Glade air freshener stored on shelf with food. Two of the three violations were corrected on the spot.

* Casey's General Store in Monett underwent a routine inspection on July 11 and three non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: employee drinks sitting on food prep counter next to biscuits; Eliminator insect spray on floor next to two-liter soda; and failure to demonstrate knowledge of proper food handling. Two of the three violations were corrected on the spot.

* Fastrip in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on July 14 and one critical and nine non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was an employee preparing and serving sandwiches with an ace bandage wrapped around wrist and forearm unable to keep hands and exposed portion of arms clean. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Burgers and More in Wheaton underwent a routine inspection on July 15 and two critical and four non-critical violations were found. Critical violations included: inside microwave dirty; and oven cleaner stored above food contact bags. The violations were corrected on the spot.

* Subway in the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Monett underwent a routine inspection on July 16 and one critical and one non-critical violation were found. The critical violation was meatballs and sausage gravy not held at proper temperature. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Carnicerea La Mexicana in Monett underwent a routine inspection on July 16 and 10 critical and four non-critical violations were found. Critical violations included: cilantro stored in moldy water, milk outdated, bloated and sour in walk-in cooler and two blue corn tortillas molded; no shelf stock identification on shellfish in meat case; fish, sweetbreads, shrimp, pork skins, cheese and sour cream not dated with seven-day discard date; hand washing sink plumbing leaking; Masa mixing area not cleaned after use, microwave dirty; employee drinks in food prep area, uncovered and stored with food; unapproved food additive; clay containers marked "not for food use" stored and used with food contact items; no hot water in restroom sink; and tea bags stored on shelf below shampoo and other personal care products. A follow-up inspection was conducted on July 22 at which time no critical or non-critical violations were found.

*Bayou Lunchbox in Monett underwent a routine inspection on July 16 and two critical and one non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: rice not labeled with discard date and not held at proper temperature; and canned food for sale from unapproved source. The violations were corrected on the spot.

* Peking Palace in Monett underwent a routine inspection on July 16 and six critical violations were found. Critical violations were: large amounts of breaded chicken waiting to fry then held at room temperature to cool; vegetables, meat, cooked chicken and eggs held in walk-in cooler at improper temperature; no dates on foods held in walk-in cooler, prep table cooler or Pepsi cooler with seven-day discard date; employee washed hands in three-compartment sink; failure to demonstrate knowledge of proper food handling; and milk, cut brocolli and soy sauce held at improper temperature. A follow-up inspection was conducted on July 22 and no critical or non-critical violations were found.

* Stumpy Burger in Shell Knob underwent a routine inspection on July 17 and two critical and one non-critical violation were found. Critical violations were: hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, Aleve and Claritan stored on shelves with food utensils and food items; and can opener with food debris on cutting blade. Both violations were corrected on the spot.

* Memories Bar and Grill in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on July 24 and one critical and no non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was a can opener with food debris. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* The Rib in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on July 28 and one critical and two non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was the cook touched ready-to-eat foods with bare hands. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Mike's Hideaway in Shell Knob underwent a routine inspection on July 30 and one critical and no non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was failure to demonstrate knowledge of proper food handling.

Food service establishments found to have non-critical violations only included: Lazy B Cafe in Cassville, routine inspection on July 10, three non-critical violations; L&L Store in Eagle Rock, routine inspection on July 10, three non-critical violations; Herb Depot in Monett, routine inspection on July 11, one non-critical violation; VFW Post in Monett, routine inspection on July 11, one non-critical violation; Barry Lawrence Developmental Center in Monett, routine inspection on July 16, one non-critical violation; Shell Knob Senior Center, routine inspection on July 24, one non-critical violation; and Roadhouse Grill & Pub, routine inspection on July 28, two non-critical violations.

Environmental Services conducts routine inspections of all food service establishments in the county.

Food service code violations are divided into two categories: critical and non-critical violations. Critical violations are more likely than other violations to contribute to food contaminations, or illness and/or injury. Non-critical violations, although important to the overall hygiene of the establishment, do not necessarily present an immediate threat to food contamination or illness and/or injury.
