Burton Smith, 93, of Clyde, Kan., passed away Aug. 11, 2008, in Park Villa Care Home, Clyde, Kan. He was born April 21, 1915, in Talmo, Kan., to Harry H. Smith and Hazel Lowell.

He attended school in Munden, Kan., and graduated from Belleville High School. He attended Emporia State Teachers College. He married Lorine Salsbury on Nov. 25, 1937, at the United Methodist Church in Chester, Neb. She preceded him in death on July 25, 2003. He taught school for five years before starting Smith Hatchery in 1941. He began working for Cloud Ceramics as a truck driver in 1954 and retired in 1986.

Survivors include: one son, Lowell Smith and his wife, Cindy, of Kansas City; four daughters, Beverly Fraser and her husband, Jerry, of Clay Center, Kan., JoAnn Lovendahl and her husband, Gary, of Shell Knob, Connie Fahey, of Clyde, Kan., and Cathy Kennedy and her husband, Pat, of Circleville, Kan.; one sister, Bernelda Winer, of Lewistown, Penn.; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorine, an infant son, his parents, and two granddaughters.

Funeral services will be at the United Methodist Church, Clyde, Kan., on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. burial will be at Zion Cemetery, Talmo, Kan.

Memorials may be made to the Clyde Ambulance Fund or the Clyde United Methodist Church.
