The Wheaton Historical Society will be hosting a Fiddler Contest at the Wheaton City Park at 7 p.m. on July 11.
The contest will feature a $500 first place prize, a $300 second place prize, a $200 dollar third place prize and a $100 fourth place prize in the open division for fiddlers age 16 and older. In the youth division, fiddlers under the age of 15 will compete for a $100 first place prize, a $75 second place prize and a $25 third place prize.
Each contestant will be required to play a waltz, hoedown and players choice. The fiddler is allowed no more than two accompanists and no electrical instruments. Tunes that are banned from the competition are "Black Mountain Rag," "Orange Blossom Special" and "Mockingbird." Fiddlers must have another tune prepared in the event that they are called back.
To enter the contest or for more information, contact Charlie Brattin at 847-4604 or Donna Youngblood at 1-800-669-7005.
In case of rain, the contest will be held in the Wheaton School gymnasium.
The Wheaton Historical Society is still accepting additional orders for Memorial Gift Bricks. The cost of these decorative gift bricks ranges from $50 to $1,000. The bricks will be used in the Wheaton Train Depot landscape as a permanent tribute.
To order a gift brick, contact Sheila Young at 1-800-789-0182.
The exterior of the Wheaton Depot is now completed and work is scheduled to begin on the interior. The proceeds from the gift brick fundraiser project will be used toward completion of the depot.
The first order of the gift bricks have been placed, and these bricks will be displayed at the depot during the Fiddlers Contest and the Wheaton Fire Department's 50th annual barbecue.
