Several area students will attend the 69th session of Missouri Boys State, which is scheduled to be held at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg from June 14 through June 21. The delegates are sponsored by area American Legion Posts.

Barry County students who will attend the 2008 session are: Timothy Frieze and Andrew Oden, Cassville High School; Tyler Cockrum, Southwest High School; Trenton Patton and Logan Terry, Purdy High School; and Ryan Odenbrett and Ty Stephens, Exeter High School.

"This program should be commended for its emphasis on consecrating lifelong relationships, citizenship and participation," said Corey Dutra, of Purdy, who attended the 2005 session. "Missouri Boys State will undoubtedly remain a highlight in my personal and professional life and maintain a reference point for my future public servitude."

Missouri Boys State is a program based on the democratic system that teaches young men the importance of competition, public office, freedom of speech and the right to vote.

After completing their junior year in high school, students are nominated by their high school counselor and selected by the Boys State district chairman. Around 1,000 young men from Missouri attend the program each year.

Students who attend the program will participate in schools of instruction, city or county activities, sports competitions and general assemblies with keynote speakers.

Speakers this year include: former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee; Representative Kenny Hulshof; Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon; State Treasurer Sarah Steelman; Sec. of State Robin Carnahan; and Navy Seal commander Eric Greitens, who is currently serving in the Department of Housing and Urban Development White House Fellowship.
