Sheriff urges parents to "Take 25"

Thursday, May 22, 2008

Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly wants to remind area citizens that National Missing Children's Day is Sunday, May 25.

The sheriff, in cooperatin with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, is encouraging parents to know there are precautions they can take to keep their children safe.

Adults are urged to take 25 minutes to review the National Center's "Take 25" national child safety campaign, which can be accessed on-line at www.missingkids.com. Copies are also available at the Barry County Sheriff's Office in Cassville.

"We know teaching children about safety works," said Sheriff Epperly. "It is important that parents take the time to talk to their children about safety."

Every year in the United States, an estimated 800,000 children are reported missing, which is more than 2,000 each day. Of that number, 200,000 are abducted by family members and 58,000 are abducted by non-family members. The primary motive for non-family abductions, according to Epperly, is sexual.
