Miles-For-Meals fundraiser to be held on Saturday

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

The Cassville Senior Center will host its 11th annual Miles-for-Meals fundraiser on the square in Cassville on Saturday, May 17.

"This is a worthy cause," said Linda Parker, senior center administrator. "The money stays in the community and helps support the nutrition program and other senior center programs.

"This year, we will serve over 72,000 meals out of the senior center," said Parker. "We serve around 6,820 meals at the center each month. Our kitchen equipment is getting older and our center provides a lot of programs. This event promotes good nutrition and it is a healthy event. Plus, it is a fun, social event."

The Cassville Senior Center Miles-for-Meals walk-a-thon/rock-a-thon will begin at 8 a.m. Teams and individuals will walk around the square or rock continuously to raise money for the center's nutrition program, which serves seniors in Cassville, Wheaton, Butterfield, McDowell, Eagle Rock, Seligman, Washburn, Ridgley and Exeter.

Each walk-a-thon/rock-a-thon team must have two to six walkers. All Miles-for-Meals participants are asked to collect individual pledge support. Team members are eligible for a variety of prizes.

An awards ceremony will be held at the end of the Miles-for-Meals event. The Cassville Senior Center will recognize the oldest and youngest walkers and rockers who participated in the event. The team and individuals who collected the most money will also be recognized.

Last year's Miles-for-Meals walk-a-thon/rock-a-thon raised $4,557 for the meals program. Over 50 individuals participated in the fundraising event. In total, participants rocked 138 miles and walked 201.5 miles during the fundraiser.

In 2006, the Senior Center raised around $7,000 through the Miles-for Meals fundraiser. The event raised around $10,000 in 2005.

Individuals, organizations and businesses can also support the Cassville Senior Center meals program by making a tax deductible donation to Miles-for-Meals. The majority of the senior center's operating expenses are funded through fundraisers and donations.

In addition to the meals program, the center provides respite services, homework and personal care and the Good Neighbor transportation program, which offers homebound seniors transportation to and from doctor and physical therapy appointments.
