Citizens can view sidewalk plans
The public will have the opportunity to view and discuss plans to build a sidewalk along Highway Y near Cassville High School during a meeting on Thursday, April 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the new Cassville Intermediate School library.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the Cassville R-IV School District, the City of Cassville and the Barry County Commission have been working on the proposed safety improvement project since last fall when a CHS student was killed in a car-pedestrian accident along the highway on the student's way to school.
On Feb. 25, MoDOT officials were in Cassville to present a conceptual design for the project, which involves construction of a 1,500-foot-long, five-foot wide sidewalk along Highway Y from Business 37 to the high school campus.
In order for the project to be completed, six area property owners must be willing to provide easements across their property. These property owners are expected to be in attendance at Thursday's meeting to further discuss the proposal.
MoDOT Assistant District 7 Engineer Dan Salisbury estimates the project will cost approximately $100,000 to complete. The city has applied for a Safe Route to Schools grant, which if received, will finance the project. MoDOT has agreed to provide the engineering work for the project at no cost to the city or school.
The meeting on April 3 will be informal and citizens are welcome to come and go during the two-hour event, according to Lori Marble, MoDOT's public information officer. Residents will be able to view the proposed plans and speak with public officials about the project.
