Meryl Helen Johnston, 86, of Shell Knob, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008, in St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield.
She was born Jan. 7, 1922, in St. Joseph, the daughter of Ralph and Amanda (Broils) Layson. On Aug. 6, 1955, in Topeka, Kan., she was united in marriage to Ralph Johnston, who preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1986. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three children and two sisters.
Survivors include: two sons, Randy R. Johnston, of Shell Knob, and Lane K. Johnston, of Springfield; a daughter, Linda J. Layson, of Olathe, Kan.; a brother, Eugene Layson, of Washing-ton state; a sister, Kay Shreve, of Montana; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She received her education in St. Joseph and graduated from Central High School. She went on to Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., and received her doctorate degree. She taught school in Kansas and Missouri for 50 years. In 1979 she moved to Shell Knob where she and her family owned and operated the Viola Boat Dock for 21 years. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Fohn Funeral Home, Shell Knob. Pastor Bob Graham will conduct the services.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Fohn Funeral Home, Shell Knob.
