Darrell L. Burns, 82, of Wheaton, Missouri, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 4, 2008, at his home.
Darrell was born November 18, 1925, in Ralph, Alabama, to the late Robert and Hattie (McCracken) Burns.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II in Okinawa and other South Pacific islands. On June 6, 1946 he married Betty Craig who survives. To this union six children were born.
During his life, he worked as a painting contractor in Tucson, Arizona, and logged in the northern California redwoods and in Alabama. In 1961 he bought a dairy and poultry farm east of Wheaton where he lived until his death. Darrell accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Ralph, Alabama, when he was 14 years old. He was currently a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church east of Wheaton.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Craig) Burns, daughters Darelyn and her husband Bob Cooper, and Diane and her husband Larry Prewitt; sons Craig and his wife Angela, Steve and his wife Julie, and Gary Burns all of Wheaton; two sisters, Clovis Hall of Ralph, Alabama and Norma Matthews of Eutaw, Alabama, as well as 19 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, David; his parents and six siblings: Irene Lancaster, Hartwell Burns, Floyd Burns, Gladys Powell, Lucille Franklin, and Aubrey Burns.
Funeral services for Darrell will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2008, in McQueen Funeral Home, Wheaton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Butterfield. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Regional Hospice.PD.
