Last Tuesday night the Cassville Ladycats struggled to deal with the height of the East Newton Lady Patriots. Cassville put up a good fight but ultimately lost 41-46.
East Newton's biggest weapon in the game might just have been their height. The Lady Patriots sport two tall post players in sisters Shyann and Katy Cooper. Shyann, who is a mix between forward and guard, is listed at 5'10", and sister, Katy, who plays the post position, is 6'1".
Both contributed to the Patriot win, especially Katy who often simply reached over outstretched Lady Wildcat hands to grab rebounds and steals. Cassville also struggled with their offensive system, often trying to work the ball into the paint only to see it turned over because a Lady Patriot got in the way. The Ladycats were also not helped by what was a loosely called contest.
Despite those struggles, Cassville had a shot to win the contest in the closing minutes. The Ladycats closed the gap to within just a few but could not retake the lead.
The home team played with East Newton for most of the contest but was doomed by their second quarter. In the second frame, East Newton was able to get capitalize on Cassville turnovers and outscore the Ladycats 20-9.
Senior Brittany Vollenweider led Cassville on the evening with 14 points. Sophomore Hannah Elkins also did well, scoring 12 points for the Ladycats.
Others scoring for Cassville were: Gail Edie 7, Gabby LeCompte 6 and Marti Richmiller 2.
The Ladycats will go on the road this week traveling to Chadwick on Thursday and to Webb City on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
