John E. Gibbons, 76, passed away at the Veteran's Hospital in Little Rock, Ark., on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, following a brief illness.
He was born on May 16, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Martin and Bridgett Kelly Gibbons. He was an U. S. Navy veteran having served in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal.
He and his wife owned and operated San Rene Resort on Kings River until they sold it in 1989. He was a member of the American Legion Post #788, and the Lions Club #10145.
He married Chloe (Kassel) Dietz, of Cape Girardeau, on May 27, 1978, in Shell Knob. She survives.
Additional survivors include: one son, Kevin Gibbons, of Lindenhurst, Ill.; three daughters, Kelly Benedict and her husband, Kris, of Willis, Texas, Susan Ommen and her husband, Todd, of Schaumburg, Ill., and Sharon Schott and her husband, Lyle, of New Braunfels, Texas; three stepsons, Dirk Dietz and his wife, Janice, of St. Louis, Drew Dietz and his wife, Melinda, of Jackson, and Drake Dietz and his wife, Denise, of Bloomington, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Scot Gibbons, and one grandson.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday at the Central Community Methodist Church with Rev. Judith Lloyd officiating and the eulogy by Cliff Przybyl. Military funeral honors were provided by the Juliet Team Missouri National Guard, Joplin.
Arrangements were under the direction of the White Funeral Home, Cassville.
