Shell Knob to host disaster drill

Thursday, January 3, 2008

On Oct. 18, 2007, the Barry-Lawrence County Local Emergency Planning District (LEPD) discussed an emergency management exercise that could be held in Shell Knob later this year.

In September of 2007, Shell Knob community members attending a town hall meeting asked David Compton, Barry County emergency management director, to schedule a disaster drill in Shell Knob.

Compton explained that the 2007 disaster drill exercise requirement was fulfilled by the January 2007 ice storm. Compton suggested the community plan a drill to be held in Shell Knob in 2008.

The Shell Knob disaster drill exercise committee held two planning sessions at Central Crossing Fire Station #1 in Shell Knob in October of 2007.

"All exercise plans are in the preparation process and no definitive decisions have been made at this time," said Compton, who has been appointed to serve on the disaster drill exercise planning committee, which is in charge of developing plans for the proposed disaster simulation.

Compton has proposed Shell Knob emergency responders participate in an after-action report to discuss options to improve emergency preparedness plans in the Shell Knob community.

A formal report and timeline are required for all LEPD disaster drill exercises. These tools will help the Shell Knob community improve its overall emergency preparedness, said Compton.

The next disaster drill exercise committee meeting is scheduled to be held at Central Crossing Fire Station #1, which is located on Highway 39 in Shell Knob, at 2 p.m. on Jan. 17.
