The Cassville Ladycats finished up their pre-Christmas schedule this week with a win over Billings. Cassville showed some tough grit in the contest coming from behind to win 46-43.
Early on the Ladycats looked as if they might win the game easily. Cassville led 24-15 at the half and seemed to be in control. However, Billings closed the gap in the third pulling to within 3 points, 28-25. Then in the final quarter Billings not only tied the game, but took the lead by four.
With two minutes remaining in the contest, Cassville cut into Billings' lead to make the score 39-37. Following a Billings miss, Cassville got a big shot from an unexpected source.
Hannah Elkins, not traditionally seen as a three-point shooter and only a sophomore, showed her versatility knocking down a three-point attempt to give the Ladycats their final lead.
With another basket and some late free-throws by seniors Gabby LeCompte and Brittany Vollenweider Cassville was able to hold on and defeat the visitors 46-43.
Brittany Vollenweider did a nice job, scoring 20 points despite being double and triple teamed by Billings. Hannah Elkins was Cassville's next leading scorer with 10.
Others finding the net for Cassville were Gail Edie 6, Gabby LeCompte 4, Brittney Wilbanks 2 and Marti Richmiller 1.
The Ladycats have now won three games in a row after starting the season 1-6.
Cassville will play again the day after Christmas. The Ladycats are scheduled to face host school Neosho in the Neosho Holiday tournament. The game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Neosho Middle School Gym.
