April elections attract few new candidates

Thursday, December 27, 2007

As of Thursday, Dec. 20, the upcoming April school board and municipal elections have attracted very few new candidates.

This year's school board elections have attracted only four new names. Incumbents at four of the six local districts have filed for re-election, and one local school board race has attracted no candidates so far.

Incumbents Mike Carr and Danny Buchanan have filed for re-election to three-year terms on the Cassville R-IV School Board. Although Lonnie McCullough, Jr., has not filed for re-election, the race has attracted one new candidate, Rachel Sheets.

Purdy R-II School Board members Ronnie Veith and Russ Neill have filed for new three-year terms on the board. Incumbent Mike Bennett has not yet filed for the other three-year term open in the R-II District.

Incumbent Angie Corn has filed for re-election to a three-year term on the Southwest R-V School Board. That race has also attracted new candidates Albert Pendergraft and Pete Rose. Incumbents Judy Friend and Janet Ballard have not filed for re-election.

Wheaton R-III School Board President Larry Prewitt and board member Lewis Royer are seeking three more years on the board. New candidate Landon Brattin has filed for another three-year term that will be vacated by Lindy Lombard, who has not yet refiled.

No candidates have filed for the Exeter R-VI School Board race, which offers three, three-year terms. Bobbie Vanzandt, Jeston Scott and Doug Weston will be leaving the board if they do not file for re-election.

Municipal elections

Of the seven local municipal races, only two feature unopposed incumbents and six have yet to attract a single candidate.

Incumbent Carrol Hayes is seeking another two-year term as Butterfield's east ward alderman. New candidate Lania Lowe has filed for a west ward alderman seat that will be vacated by Francis Hobbs this year.

Exeter's municipal election has attracted one new candidate. Marilyn Erwin has filed for the north ward aldermen seat that is currently occupied by Brenda Adkins, who has not yet refiled. Incumbent Jeff Scott also filed for re-election to his south ward aldermen seat.

No candidates have filed for the municipal elections in Purdy, Seligman, Washburn, Cassville or Wheaton or the mayoral election in Butterfield.

Filing for the municipal and school board offices opened on Dec. 18, 2007. Candidates must file for the election by Jan. 22, 2008. The election is scheduled to be held on April 8, 2008.
