CHS Ladycats finish fourth at tourney
The Cassville Ladycats competed in the annual Blue Eye Tournament this weekend and walked away with a fourth place finish. The Ladycats ended the tournament 1-2, beating Wheaton but falling to Eureka Springs, Ark., and Hollister.
In the first contest, Cassville took on the Wheaton Lady Bulldogs.
The Ladycats got out to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter and were able to hold off some Wheaton rallies to win 45-32.
Brittany Vollenweider led Cassville with 19 points and six rebounds. Hannah Elkins had 10 points in the win. Other scorers for Cassville were: Gabby LeCompte 5, Lindsey Turner 5, Gail Edie 4 and Marti Richmiller 2.
Haley Goostree's 14 points and five rebounds led Wheaton. Megan Littlefield chipped in 12, and Megan Brattin, Elizabeth Shockley and Sarah Weatherman all had 2 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
In semi-final action, Cassville faced the Eureka Springs Lady Highlanders.
The Ladycats got off to a sluggish start and trailed 28-14 at half. However, Cassville came out and played strong in the second half and cut the lead but fell just short of the victory 50-57.
In the third place game, Cassville took on Hollister.
The Ladycats started well once again, leading by five at half-time. Hollister fought back and used an 11-3 run in the third quarter to secure a lead and moved onto a 31-30 victory.
Cassville missed Vollenweider, its top scorer and rebounder, in the contest. Ariel Oswald finished as Cassville's top scorer with 9 points. Others scoring for the Ladycats were: Elkins 7, Richmiller 4, LeCompte 4, Edie 3 and Turner 3.
Cassville begins play in the Aurora Tournament this week. The Ladycats played Tuesday against Aurora, and their next game is pending on that outcome.
The Cassville junior varsity also competed in the Blue Eye Tournament, falling to Blue Eye 91-11 and to Spokane 48-16. Mandi Thompson led scoring in the Blue Eye game with 5.
