County enrollment rises

Barry County's seven public school districts welcomed a total of 6,892 students through their doors at the start of the 2007-08 school year. This enrollment total represents a slight increase over last year when districts served a total of 6,773 students at the start of the year.

Cassville, Purdy and Exeter school districts reported small decreases in enrollment while Wheaton, Monett and Southwest saw their student numbers increase. Shell Knob's enrollment stayed almost exactly the same with 165 students enrolled this fall as compared to 164 last fall.

Cassville enrollment decreased by only 17 students, going from 2,101 last year to 2,084 this year. Purdy also saw a 17-student decrease in enrollment, dropping from 737 last fall to 720 this fall.

The student population at Exeter remains almost unchanged with an enrollment of 336 this year as compared to 340 a year ago.

The Wheaton and Monett school districts showed the most growth in student numbers this fall. Monett's enrollment increased by 6 percent, going from 2,074 last year to 2,200 at the start of the 2007-08 school year.

Enrollment at Wheaton rose by almost 5 percent, increasing from 440 at the start of the 2006-07 school year to 461 this fall.

Southwest also experienced a small boost in enrollment. Their student numbers went from 900 last year to 926 this year.

A breakdown of enrollment figures by grade is provided below for all seven of Barry County's school districts. The number in parenthesis is the number enrolled in that grade at the start of the 2006-07 school year.

• Cassville: preschool, 62 (53); kindergarten, 129 (154); first grade, 156 (155); second grade, 156 (158); third grade, 147 (139); fourth grade, 138 (133); fifth grade, 138 (144); sixth grade, 145 (153); seventh grade, 148 (163); eighth grade, 158 (172); ninth grade, 203 (191); 10th grade, 186 (180); 11th grade, 158 (167); and 12th grade, 160 (139).

• Monett: preschool, 92 (68); kindergarten, 182 (204); first grade, 189 (160); second grade, 160 (178); third grade, 180 (135); fourth grade, 156 (153); fifth grade, 161 (129); sixth grade, 135 (133); seventh grade, 168 (136); eighth grade, 153 (161); ninth grade, 178 (185); 10th grade, 176 (154); 11th grade, 142 (140); and 12th grade, 128 (138).

• Southwest: kindergarten, 70 (63); first grade, 73 (76); second grade, 72 (84); third grade, 81 (63); fourth grade, 65 (58); fifth grade, 65 (74); sixth grade, 74 (69); seventh grade, 75 (66); eighth grade, 72 (71); ninth grade, 79 (74); 10th grade, 76 (76); 11th grade, 62 (69); and 12th grade, 62 (57).

• Purdy: kindergarten, 50 (57); first grade, 49 (61); second grade, 65 (51); third grade, 46 (60); fourth grade, 57 (61); fifth grade, 58 (59); sixth grade, 52 (66); seventh grade, 60 (58); eighth grade, 54 (73); ninth grade, 66 (47); 10th grade, 53 (63); 11th grade, 64 (47); and 12th grade, 46 (34).

• Shell Knob: kindergarten, 17 (19); first grade, 18 (16); second grade, 18 (12); third grade, 12 (20); fourth grade, 21 (13); fifth grade, 13 (17); sixth grade, 20 (20); seventh grade, 24 (23); and eighth grade, 22 (24).

All school districts noted that enrollment figures would continue to fluctuate until after the Labor Day holiday. The figures provided are preliminary enrollment figures only.
