Three Cassville teams competed this week in the Babe Ruth district tournament held in Marionville and Aurora.
The Cassville Democrat team finished highest as they took third in the competition. Both the Cassville Rotary team and the Cassville Arning team also did well, placing fifth and seventh respectively.
Enroute to a third place finish, the Cassville Democrat squad took on Marionville, Mt. Vernon, Aurora-Hicks and Monett. The squad defeated Marionville 10-0 then beat Mt. Vernon 16-0. Their third game was against Aurora-Hicks, and despite a five-run rally in the last inning, Cassville lost 7-9. The team then moved into the second-elimination portion of the bracket and took on Monett. The Cubs squad took the early lead in the game and held on to win 5-2.
Kyle Rhea had an outstanding tournament, hitting .600 with five runs, six RBI and five extra base hits. Levi Roberts also had a good run, batting .400 with six runs, four RBI, two extra base hits and an on-base percentage of .667.
Travis Northern was one of Cassville's best pitchers. Northern went 1-0 with five innings pitched, surrendering only one hit and one walk compared to his seven strikeouts.
The Cassville Rotary team was seeded fourth in the tournament. They beat East Newton in their first match-up, but Aurora Hicks was too tough in their second outing and sent the team to the other bracket. There, they played Monett and the in-county rival came out with the victory.
The Cassville Arning team won its first game of the tournament against Aurora Paurbury but lost to Aurora Hicks and East Newton.
The Cassville teams as well as the East Newton squad will now meld together to form a team for the state tournament.
The tournament is being held here at Cassville at the Cassville High School field with games beginning on Thursday, July 26 at Wildcat Field. A big Opening Night Celebration is planned for that evening and the community is invited to come ut and attend.
