Supplies needed for back-to-school fair

Thursday, July 12, 2007

The Barry County OACAC Neighborhood Center is now accepting donations for its 2007 School Readiness Fair, which will be held at the Family Life Center in Cassville on Aug. 3.

"Our goal this year is to serve 250 kids," said Gail Jenkins, Barry County OACAC director. "Through the fair we try to make sure every child is able to start school with a backpack and school supplies, which will help them begin the year on a positive note."

In order to serve 250 Barry County youngsters, the OACAC Neighborhood Center will be collecting school supply donations through July 31.

A drop-off location has been established at the US Bank in Monett for northern Barry County residents. Southern Barry County residents can drop off supplies or monetary donations at the Barry County Neighborhood Center, which is located at 907 Main St. in Cassville.

The Neighborhood Center will also be accepting registrations for the School Readiness Fair at its office in Cassville. Interested individuals will be required to present Social Security cards and fill out a few forms in order to register for the fair. Applications will be accepted until Friday, July 13.

Children who are registered for the School Readiness Fair will receive a backpack and school supplies. Share Your Christmas will also provide each child with a complete outfit of clothing.

Families attending the fair will be able to pick up free information on health care, children's advocacy services, drug use prevention, physical fitness and other local services at the fair.

"This year our theme is Super Bowl School Fair, so we have a lot of sports-themed activities planned," said Jenkins. "We have received donations from several professional teams that we will be giving away as door prizes."

Last year, the seventh annual Barry County OACAC Neighborhood Center School Readiness Fair served over 200 area children. Nearly 50 individuals volunteered during the fair, which was made possible by donations from local individuals, organizations and businesses.
