Southwest swept two matches from Verona last week in middle school volleyball action. The Lady Trojans improved their overall record to 4-9-1 with one match remaining against Exeter.
Setter and co-captain Kirstie Ickes led Southwest with 12 attacks and nine service aces against Verona.
"This team has come so far," said Coach Steve Voyak. "When they started out as seventh graders last year, I was not sure how many matches they would win. They lack size and foot speed, but they have learned to position themselves and communicate and overcome many obstacles.
"I am very proud of what they have achieved," said Voyak. "Now they have to work hard to make the transition to high school volleyball."
In seventh grade play, Verona swept Southwest. Keneisha Walden (10 service points) and Jacey Still (seven attacks) led the Lady Trojans, who have an overall record of 1-9.
"This group has a long way to go, but I have seen some increase in intensity recently that will help them in preparing for next season," Voyak said.
