The Southwest Middle School volleyball team downed Hurley in seventh grade action last week for its first win of the season.
Jacey Still and Keneisha Walden both had six serving points, as the Lady Trojans won 25-21, 25-15. The seventh graders also lost a match at Exeter later in the week to bring their season record to 1-7.
"After all the hard work, it was nice to see it pay off for a win," said Coach Steve Voyak. "Now, the players need to learn consistency and try to improve their game even more."
In eighth grade action, Southwest lost four of five matches, including all three at the Exeter Tourney last weekend.
The Lady Trojans did defeat Hurley in their lone home match. Southwest's Jessica Pendergraft led the way with four kills and three service aces. The eighth grade team has a record of 2-8-1.
"We lost some players to grades on both teams and it hurt our depth, but I thought the girls played hard despite being shorthanded," Voyak said.
Southwest travels to Hurley on Thursday before finishing the season with matches against Verona on March 26 and 29 and against Exeter on April 3.
