For The Birds under new ownership

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Greg and Brenda Beck, of Cassville, and Fred and Beth Davis, of Verona, purchased For The Birds Nature and Garden Center, which is located on Highway 112 south of Cassville, from Jim and Lynne Curtis and Bob Maib on Feb. 23.

"Beth and I have both been gardening for many years," said Brenda. "We are both involved in the Master Gardener's program through the University of Missouri Extension.

"I was in here one Sunday and the previous owners said the business was for sale," said Brenda. "The opportunity arose for us to purchase it and so we did, and the business fit like a glove."

Brenda and Beth met around five years ago, when Brenda was hired to work at the same company as Beth was employed at in Monett. When the two women learned about their mutual hobby interests in horticulture, they began participating in volunteer work together during their spare time.

"We've been doing the courthouse flower beds for many years," said Brenda. "We also did the Shell Knob Home and Garden Show."

The women hope to expand the landscaping services at For The Birds. They also plan to add cooking with herbs, soap making, butterfly gardening and other adult botanical classes, as well as beginning gardening courses for young adults and children.

"For the kids, we will have hands-on gardening programs that offer quick results, like sunflowers," said Brenda. "We want to give them something that will really get them interested in gardening."

The women also plan to start a display garden on-site at the nature and garden center.

"Our customers will find the same quality plants and customer service that they have been used to," said Brenda.

"We don't just warehouse plants," said Beth. "We offer quality plants that are grown with care. Jim and Lynne Curtis will continue to work at the business to teach us how to grow the plants with quality and care."

For The Birds offers perennials, trees, shrubs, pottery, bird supplies, dirt, compost, soil mixtures, fertilizers and many other gardening supplies and accessories.

"If a customer is interested in something particular that we don't have, we will try to find it for them," said Brenda. "And if they ask a question that we don't have an answer to, we will try to find out for them."

Brenda is a Cassville native, and Beth has lived in the Verona area for the last 28 years.

For The Birds is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
